About

A family company
building family companies.

Our Story

It started with a shovel and a handshake.

In 1959, Kuesel began work in O'Fallon, Missouri with a single piece of equipment and a reputation built one job at a time. The company was acquired by Mike Steiniger in 1997, who expanded operations, strengthened capabilities, and built the foundation for long-term growth across the St. Louis region. In 2023, Ownership transitioned to three of Mike's sons, continuing the family legacy with a focus on growth, operational excellence, and long-term investment in people and infrastructure. Now, Kuesel Excavating is one of the most respected heavy civil contractors in the Midwest — and the foundation of something larger.

The Kuesel Group is the natural next chapter. We're a family-owned holding company that acquires exceptional small and mid-sized businesses across the St. Louis area and operates them for the long term. We use our own capital. We answer to no outside investors. And we look for owners who care as much about what happens next as they do about price.

We're not financial engineers. We're operators. We've made payroll. We've lost bids. We've trained the next generation. That perspective shapes every conversation we have with a seller.

What We Believe

Four convictions that shape every deal.

People before models.

A spreadsheet doesn't show up at 5am to start a job. The team you've built is the business — and we treat them that way.

Patience is a strategy.

We invest for the next decade, not the next quarter. Some of the best returns come from doing nothing flashy for a long time.

Reputation compounds.

A name that sellers, brokers, and employees trust is worth more than any financial leverage. We protect ours by doing what we say.

St. Louis matters.

We invest where we live. The companies we own employ our neighbors and serve our communities. That's a feature, not a constraint.
